The Shanghai Bouzouki 2004

I approached Paddy Burgin mid 2003 about making me a Bouzouki, in fact it was to be an Octave mandolin originally but it grew to be a bouzouki in the end.

I wanted the instrument to have a hardwood top, and not the usual softwood top like Spruce. I had heard instruments made with Koa and Tasmanian Blackwood before and was very impressed with the very warm, crisp tone. There was alot to think about and Paddy was very patient in its develpoment. It also brought alot of tonal and constructural challenges for Paddy, but the end result is something very special. Paddy's attention to detail can be clearly seen above in the pictures.

This instrument is not for the faint hearted. This instrument is powerful, and is ready to sing at the slightest touch. With a little getting used to, this instrument can be used to sing exactly what you want it too. I really enjoy this instrument.

Tasmanian Blackwood holds many of the same tonal qualities of Koa and has a magical quality almost, as the figure of the wood seems to move when the instrument is turned even slightly. Very beautiful wood indeed.

Paddy was so impressed with the final result that it has now been added to his regular catalogue, and he has named it " The Shanghai Bouzouki " I recommend Paddy's work very highly and feel very lucky to be the owner of the very first ( of I am very sure, Many ! ) Shanghai Bouzouki's.

Thanks Paddy !

Kieron.
